Waterproofing materials a choice between classic and modernity

Italojewerly WWItalojewerly WW

Modern waterproofing materials come in a wide variety, which sometimes leaves one stuck for choice but also gives freedom of choice. Actually, felt was the only material available a few decades ago for performing basement and foundation work. It was used to provide both vertical and horizontal protection against moisture intrusion. However, not all of them limited themselves to laying two layers by heating and adhering this roll material.

The waterproofing layer and related surfaces must be as contiguous as possible in order to meet today’s standards. The following resources are used in order to solve this problem:

  • penetrating waterproofing;
  • Rolled adhesive waterproofing;
  • sheathing waterproofing.

Basement cladding

A private home’s basement insulation and facing are crucial steps in the construction of a warm, well-built structure.

Not only does a well-executed foundation offer aesthetic benefits, but it also shields the structure from outside influences and prevents erosion.

There are numerous options available to you for finishing the basement. The primary ones are enumerated here.

Ornamental plaster. Plastering combined with painting is regarded as the most popular finishing technique. Such finishing is thought to have the advantages of being inexpensive and offering a large selection of materials. Short-lived drawbacks can be identified among them.

Utilizing artificial or natural stone for finishing. Stone is always beautiful, and a house lined with it will be content for a very long time to come.

There are drawbacks to finishing with stone, despite its many benefits. Such material is very expensive and heavy, which makes installation very difficult. Artificial stone is used to make the task easier because it is lighter, but installation still needs extra work and supplies.

Siding facing the basement. Siding is a thin polypropylene panel that is 3 mm thick. There are numerous varieties that resemble the various cladding material types in terms of appearance. This kind of cladding has excellent mechanical properties, which make it highly functional.

The heat in the house will be retained for as long as possible with a faced and insulated foundation.

Technology of installation of insulation

Redmagic WWRedmagic WW

The first step in any insulation or waterproofing project on a brick or wooden home should be cleaning the area that will be insulated.

The basement’s overlap with the ground must then be examined, and any contraclones that might potentially introduce moisture to the house’s foundation must be found.

Installing foam boards made of polystyrene.

Subsequently, the task sequence is as follows:

  1. Insulation of the basement of a wooden or brick house begins with the arrangement of a protective airtight layer. It can be done with the help of special moisture-proof materials that have an adhesive base. They are easily glued on the surface and help to protect the structure from the effects of moisture.
  2. Then it is necessary to apply a waterproofing layer. This is an important factor in ensuring proper thermal insulation of the basement and ground floor. Waterproofing is designed to divert groundwater and any precipitation from the walls of the structure.
  3. Laying polystyrene foam boards is one of the most important stages of insulating the basement and ground floor of a wooden house. In most cases, one layer of plates with a thickness of 5-8 cm will be enough. But much will depend on climatic conditions in the area, in accordance with which it is necessary to select the thickness of the basement insulation layer. If the weather conditions are difficult, it is recommended to install two layers of polystyrene foam boards, with the second layer installed so that the boards overlap the joints of the first layer. In this case, the so-called "cold bridges" will not appear, which significantly reduce the effectiveness of insulation work of a wooden house.

It is not permitted to apply a decorative layer to polystyrene boards right away after installation due to the unique insulation technology used in these boards.

As was already mentioned, you don’t need specialized tools to insulate the basement. You can do it yourself. However, it is best to complete waterproofing and thermal insulation work right away when the house is being built. The work will be more efficiently done in this scenario.

Insulating the basement and foundation of the house with expanded clay

Redmagic WWRedmagic WW

Because of its porous structure, claydite readily absorbs moisture, making it a poor choice for foundation insulation. On the other hand, it can also function effectively as an insulator if utilized in accordance with a specific technological scenario.

The following technological measures must be followed in order to achieve this:

  • It is necessary to dig a foundation trench, the depth of the entire foundation and a width of at least one meter.
  • Then it is necessary to lay the roofing felt (overlapping) in the trench, so that it rises both on the walls of the house and the trench itself. Seams, of course, are glued, and the walls are covered with bituminous mastic.
  • Then expanded claydite of non-uniform fraction is poured into the ditch. This will avoid any blown-in areas in the insulation layer. As the expanded clay, it is desirable to tamp it down.
  • On the plane of the basement, the fastening of the purlin is carried out, which is covered with planks. The result is a structure similar to wooden formwork, which is created around the perimeter of the entire house. In such a wooden system is poured clay slurry diluted with water, up to 15 cm thick. All other space is filled with expanded claydite. At the end of the formwork is closed with a cover at an angle of at least 45 degrees, this will protect the plinth from the accumulation of precipitation.
  • The final stage is to close the trench with another layer of roofing felt, on which sand is poured, which serves as a good base for creating a concrete pavement.

Installing a waterproofing layer for the basement

Vagamo USVagamo US

The process of choosing basic materials and components for the protective layer commences after the intended use and necessary attributes have been established.

It is preferable to create a thermal insulation layer from the outside if one is required. This will improve protection effectiveness in addition to saving interior space. When the insulator is installed from the inside, it will prevent the walls from stabilizing and rising to room temperature. Critical loads will be applied to the material used to construct the house’s plinth. Temperature variations on a daily and seasonal basis negatively impact it and shorten its service life.

A moisture-protective layer was laid when the building’s base was erected around the perimeter of the bearing structures on the gravel-sand substrate. The plinth may be constructed as a standalone component or as a monolith.

The best plan for insulating and waterproofing the basement

In the second scenario, extra security is added prior to construction. This will act as an extra defense against moisture from the earth seeping into the walls. This procedure is known by specialists as "horizontal waterproofing of the basement." Before installing the walls, the layer is repeated in the upper portion if needed.

It’s important to carefully read the installation instructions and consider all suggestions when buying waterproofing materials. Products from Universal can be used to waterproof basements made of concrete, brick, and block. However, if they are applied to unprepared surfaces, all efforts will be in vain. It must be cleared of debris, dust, and grease.

The surface must be leveled before applying roll and film materials to ensure that the insulation layer fits tightly. A unique composition called primer will aid in enhancing the quality of adhesion to the base. This offer is pertinent if setting up a living or working space beneath the main house is the plan. In this instance, extra care and precision are used in the exterior waterproofing of the basement.

Appropriate basement waterproofing and insulation technology

This market segment’s products contain a sizable portion of bitumen-based materials. The performance characteristics of compositions modified by additives with a fiberglass or nonwoven polymer fabric reinforcing base are noticeably better than those of comparable products from the previous generation, and they serve as a dependable barrier against moisture penetration into the basement. The following roll and sheet material installation techniques are provided by manufacturers:

  • Mechanical. The layer is fixed with fasteners. Joints and edges are treated with sealing compounds.
  • Overlay. The principle of softening, increasing elasticity and adhesion of bitumen under the influence of high temperature is used as a basis. Warm up the material with a torch and sequentially lay it down.
  • Adhesive. There is no need to use additional tools or material during installation. The adhesive layer is already applied during production. When laying, the protective film or paper must be removed and the material must be fixed in place.

Liquid insulation materials are another category that offers a large selection. Depending on how they are applied, they are typically categorized into the following groups:

  • Coating. Traditional way of creating a protective layer. The composition firmly adheres to the treated surface and has a small shrinkage coefficient when drying.
  • Paint. This type of material is characterized by the presence of a binder and filler. The name speaks about the principle of action. The liquid binder partially penetrates into the pores and the filler creates a strength layer.
  • Penetrating. Surface-active and film-forming compounds. It is necessary to wait for the recommended time before starting the next operation. It is indicated on the product packaging and different formulations have specific values for complete polymerization of the layer. Often used when it is necessary to waterproof the basement from the inside with subsequent finishing. For example, in the construction of swimming pools and baths.
  • Sprayable. Applied with a special tool. In this category, compositions with foamers are offered. In this case, the layer acts as an insulator.

Plaster waterproofing layer sprayed on the foundation and plinth

Any kind of foundation creates a layer of protection. even if the base is made up of poles or piles. Prior to installing the foundation footing or strapping, waterproofing material needs to be applied to all surfaces that will come into contact with one another. If there are indications of moisture seeping into the supporting structure while the building is in use, it is imperative to locate the leak as soon as possible and take action to stop it.

9. Warm plaster insulation

Vagamo USGeekbuying WW

Dry adhesive mixtures, which are distinct from their decorative counterpart, are what warm plaster is known as. The thermal insulator may consist of polystrol foam, vermiculite, or sawdust.

Benefits

  • monolithicity of thermal insulation;
  • ease of installation, because you can start applying warm plaster immediately after the preliminary priming layer dries up. If it is planned to apply thermal insulation in one layer, you can do without even a reinforcing mesh;
  • relatively low price.

Drawbacks quite a few

  • water absorption, so thorough waterproofing is necessary;
  • it is impossible to make a layer thicker than 5 cm, otherwise it will be necessary to apply insulation not only outside, but also inside;
  • heavy weight;
  • Warm plaster cannot fulfill the role of a finishing material.

Selection of thermal insulation material

Polystyrene foam is the ideal material to use for independent work. It is made up of boards that fasten to the walls with screws or glue. Although this material is resistant to moisture and long-lasting in use, you have an alternative insulator to choose from.

Comparing the properties of polyurethane foam, expanded polystyrene, and mineral wool. To enlarge, click.

The selection of insulation material is influenced by the following factors:

  • The presence of a basement and its function;
  • Type of house (brick, wooden or monolithic);
  • The thickness of the foundation and walls
  • the type of foundation (strip, slab, block or monolithic);
  • climate in the area of residence.

Mineral wool

Because fiber insulation is so inexpensive, it has always been very popular. There are various types of this material available, including glass wool, basalt wool, and mineral wool. They are all very effective at insulating and have a considerable lifespan.

Slabs of mineral wool.

Expert builders advise against insulating a basement with absorbent cotton. It works better for the house’s interior insulation. It will require a lot more work if used outside the home. For instance, every surface where the batts are placed needs to be waterproofed. The reason for this is that it will instantly stop serving as an insulator if it gets wet.

Additionally, the wool lumps up due to soil pressure and frequent mechanical damage. The resulting gaps let the cold seep into the structure.

Styrofoam

Since Styrofoam has been manufactured and utilized for many years as an insulator, its benefits and drawbacks are well known. Its durability is thought to be its primary benefit. Although the new, pricey insulation materials haven’t been put to the test over time, foam is known for having a long lifespan. It will undoubtedly last you several decades and shield the basement from damage and chilly air intrusion.

Affixing foam boards to the lower level.

The fact that this material is widely accessible is another benefit. Many businesses manufacture foam plastic, so even in a small city, it should not be difficult to locate boards that are the right size and thickness.

It is well known that multi-story buildings’ exterior walls are insulated with foam plastic. This is also the point at which the material’s primary drawback, its poor fire resistance, is revealed. However, producers have considered this drawback and the majority of them have shifted to producing a unique variety of foam plastic. It now has something added to it that stops combustion and slows the fire’s spread. Often, terms like "self-extinguishing" and "non-combustible" are printed on the material’s packaging.

Since the basement is not in direct contact with electrical wiring, foam boards are a safe material to use for home insulation.

Polyurethane foam

A polyurethane foam is the most widely used insulator currently in use. They can be used to cover almost anything by spraying it on. The composition perfectly covers the walls and fills in small cracks, and the work is done quickly and easily.

Foam made of polyurethane covering walls.

The polyurethane foam creates a thin layer to shield the basement and foundation after it dries.

It is noteworthy that this particular type of insulation has the ability to reject steam and moisture, meaning that film or foil need not be applied on top of it.

Based on empirical evidence, polyurethane foam has an extended lifespan of several decades. You can hire workers or purchase a specialized spraying device.

Penofol

Polyethylene foam covered in a thin layer of foil is the material used to make penofol. The basement and foundation remain warm because of the air bubbles in the foam capsules. The foil shields the material from moisture and improves its thermal insulation.

A thin film that comes in rolls is called foam foil. It can be applied either by itself or in conjunction with additional heat insulators.

Why waterproofing is necessary

ChicMe WWRedmagic WW

The basement or cellar floor is typically located below ground level. This indicates that there is contact between the walls and the ground. The subterranean portion is typically constructed using prefabricated reinforced concrete (FBS blocks; refer to Table 1). Basement built from FBS blocks: quick, dependable, long-lasting reinforced concrete monolithic structure.

Without waterproofing, the basement collapsed

The structure of this material is robust but still porous. When the foundation is shielded from moisture intrusion on all sides, it will be dependable. If this isn’t done, unfavorable and potentially harmful things might show up.

  • Moisture from the soil, atmospheric precipitation, nearby groundwater, through the capillaries of concrete easily penetrate into the body of the basement structure, and then get to the main walls.

High groundwater level in the basement

  • If the walls and floor are not protected from water, then after some time its harmful effects will lead to oxidation and rusting of the reinforcement.
  • Seasonal temperature fluctuations, and periodic freezing/thawing of water in concrete, will disrupt the structure of the material, which will noticeably reduce the strength of the entire foundation.

Fissures in the foundation

  • In other words, neglecting waterproofing is fraught with subsidence of the building, cracks in the blocks, weakening and gradual destruction of the monolith.
  • In addition, a damp foundation is a breeding ground for various microorganisms, fungus, mold, and, consequently, unhealthy damp atmosphere in the room.

Mold and moisture in the lower level

Polystyrene boards are used as foundation insulation in dry climates and sandy soils where groundwater is found (refer to the following table). If sheathing insulation is the only type of insulation used below the foundation level, this may be sufficient. However, we will discuss today how to fully protect the basement and foundation with your own hands by utilizing contemporary, dependable materials to enclose the surface.

Technology of foundation insulation with polystyrene boards

Stylewe WWNoracora WW

The second name for regular foam with modifications to give it unique properties is polystyrene. There are various brands of polystyrene boards available on the market, and they vary in thickness, density, and resistance to mechanical damage. Slabs of 50–100 mm thick polystyrene are sufficient to insulate the foundation from the inside.

Polystyrene boards for insulation of the foundation

The method of using polystyrene to insulate the foundation from the inside:

  1. Prepare the walls for thermal insulation: leveling, eliminate large gradients on the walls. Seams and cracks, if necessary, are widened to a solid base, and then waterproofed and sealed with a special composition.
  2. Waterproofing of the foundation is carried out. It is recommended to use penetrating waterproofing for buildings built on damp and bubbling soils, as well as for buildings without external thermal insulation.
  3. Polystyrene boards are glued on a special glue, which is sold as a dry mixture or solution. The glue is applied to the board point by point, at least 6-8 points per sheet, and firmly pressed to the base. The process of applying special glue to the boards
  4. Sheets have grooves for ease of laying, when laying it is necessary to align them. If thermal insulation is laid in several rows, they should be staggered.
  5. After the glue dries, it is necessary to additionally fix polystyrene sheets with special dowels with a wide round header. In polystyrene boards drill a hole of such depth that it passed through the insulation boards and went into the foundation by 50-60 mm. A plastic dowel is hammered into the holes and then a special nail is inserted into the dowel. The dowel pins should be flush with the insulation boards. A special dowel with a flat head is hammered into the polystyrene board
  6. Significant disadvantages of polystyrene is its instability to damage by rodents, so from the side of the room it must be protected with a reinforcing metal mesh. Mesh is placed on a layer of cement-based glue, after which it is plastered on it. Any finishing coat can be applied over the dried plaster.

Rolled or pasted insulation

Redmagic WWRedmagic WW

The most common approach is this one. On the outside of the building, it is done in up to five layers using specific film materials. The primary prerequisite is that the material must provide tight adhesion and continuity to the walls to the greatest extent possible. These are synthetic, bituminous, or polymeric films that are applied from the exterior to the walls. Either heating is used to adhere the strips, or mastic is used. After applying the strips overlapping, the joints are cemented together.

Technically speaking, this is the most complicated application of technology because it requires the construction of a protective wall with the highest possible density of concrete or brick connections. You can construct a reinforced concrete wall or a brick (half a brick) wall to shield the insulation from harm. When installed correctly, insulation can last for several decades.

To properly waterproof a basement floor, start with a clean surface, removing dirt, dust, and debris. Any cracks or gaps should be filled with a suitable sealant to ensure a smooth base. Apply a waterproofing membrane, like a sheet or liquid-applied coating, across the entire floor, ensuring the edges are sealed and overlap with the wall waterproofing for complete protection. Consider adding a drainage system or sump pump to handle any water that might still find its way in. This approach helps prevent water seepage and keeps your basement dry and free from moisture-related issues like mold or mildew. With the right materials and careful installation, you can protect your basement floor from water damage for years to come.

Insulating the foundation from inside

ChicMe WWRedmagic WW

There are not many benefits when it comes to internal foundation insulation:

  • insulation from the inside will improve the microclimate in the basement rooms and in the whole house
  • internal insulation will prevent condensation in the basement rooms

The drawbacks include the fact that the foundation will continue to freeze from the outside in response to the temperature differential and the impact of frost heave forces, which will cause the soil to begin to deform the foundation and show cracks around the perimeter and inclined in the mass of the structure.

There are many ways to insulate the foundation from the inside, but none of them can negate the benefits of high-quality waterproofing, so it’s important to consider how penetrating waterproofing will protect the entire concrete mass. It makes sense to finish the basement’s interior while the insulation is installed.

Depending on the following criteria, different methods of internal foundation insulation are selected:

  • type of soil and groundwater level
  • whether or not there is insulation on the inside
  • temperature conditions on the outside of the foundation
  • conditions that need to be created in the basement room – temperature, humidity, taking into account how ventilation and heating are solved
  • design features of the house, the size of the basement and ground floor
  • whether it is necessary to decorate the basement in the future

Despite the abundance of new, high-tech, and energy-efficient materials available, the time-tested, traditional method of thermal insulation using expanded clay is still in use today. When claydite is poured into the space beneath the floor, it drains water and forms an air cushion. By sandwiching mineral wool mats between the lags on a layer of polyethylene film vapor barrier, the floor can be made more insulated.

Insulation of the foundation with expanded polystyrene

Think about using expanded polystyrene to insulate the foundation from the inside.

For internal thermal insulation of basement walls, extrusion polystyrene foam (EPPS), also known as penoplex, is sufficient at a thickness of 50–100 mm, depending on the climate zone, and a compressive strength of at least 200 kPa.

  1. Clean all seams and cracks in the walls for, waterproof and seal with sealant or foam. Level the walls.
  2. Perform waterproofing. If the foundation does not have external waterproofing and is located in a pudgy wet soil, it is advisable to choose penetrating waterproofing.
  3. The board EPPS is glued to the walls with a special adhesive available on the market in the form of a dry mixture. You can use a ready-made adhesive from the group of polymer or polyurethane adhesives. The glue is applied dotwise or in strips and firmly press the sheet to the wall. The grooves in the foamlex sheets, when aligned, produce a smooth and tight joint. When laying in rows, it is convenient to place the sheets in staggered order.
  4. After the glue has dried completely, the insulation sheets are attached to the walls with special dowels in a plastic shell, preventing the formation of cold bridges. Dowels are installed in drilled holes with a penetration of at least 50 mm into the concrete, and special nails. The dowel pins are flush with the insulation sheets, the minimum number of dowels per one board is 4 pcs.

An additional point to consider is that all buildings that are close to the foundation, such as internal walls and partitions, need to be insulated. If insulation is neglected, condensation will build up in the basement’s corners and cold bridges will form between these walls.

Since they lose the most heat, corners need to have extra insulation. On each side of the corner, it is advised to add a second layer of thermal insulation that is 0.5 meters wide. The same technique is used to fasten the second layer as the first.

As a result, thermal insulation from the inside is feasible and appears to be fairly appealing at first. But experts advise against using this strategy until absolutely necessary.

One more detail: although the foundation is uninsulated from the exterior, the house is already constructed. If external insulation is chosen in this instance, it will take a lot of time and labor to complete. One wall at a time, the foundation will need to be excavated gradually. Each trench’s length shouldn’t be greater than half the foundation wall’s length. You can only move on to the next trench after backfilling and compacting the previous one, as it is not only foolish but also dangerous to artificially lower the bearing capacity of the foundation soils of an already-built home.

The "hardest" scenario is when someone purchases a home with an uninsulated foundation, for example, in the absence of knowledge about the foundation’s state. In this instance, local excavations will be required to investigate, ascertain the depth of the basement and the condition of the structure’s concrete. Based on the findings, conclusions will be made regarding the type and method of device that will be used to provide the necessary thermal insulation.

Choice of insulation for the basement

Only plates and sprayed materials based on polymers fully satisfy the above requirements among the wide variety of contemporary insulators. Let’s take a closer look at their attributes.

Expanded polystyrene foam

Styrofoam, or expanded polystyrene, has been used as insulation for a very long time and hasn’t changed. Its low weight, perfect heat retention, lack of moisture absorption, ease of cutting, and ease of installation make it simple to install. Furthermore, foam plastic has the lowest cost of any polymer insulator, which is a strong argument in its favor when working with a tight budget or insulating large areas.

Utilizing foam plastic for basement insulation

Choose PSB-C 25 or PSB-C 35 foam, which has a higher density and is more resistant to mechanical loads, to insulate the basement. The plates range in thickness from 20 to 100 mm, and the number of layers of insulation that can be installed depends on the weather. The material is resistant to even the harshest frosts and summer heat because it can tolerate temperature changes from -60 °C to +80 °C without losing its properties. The average service life of a heat-insulating pie is 25 years, and it can last up to 10 years if it is arranged well.

Notwithstanding all of its benefits, foam plastic has drawbacks as well. For starters, it is easily broken by rodents and has a low bending strength, making it brittle.

The insulation was chewed through by mice.

Furthermore, in the event that waterproofing is lacking, moisture seeps into the material’s upper layers and, when it freezes, causes the boards to crumble.

Extruded polystyrene foam

The structure of EPPS is denser than that of foam plastic, and its cells are no larger than 1 mm. This establishes a high mechanical strength and nearly zero water absorption. Additionally, extruded polystyrene foam exhibits greater resistance against microbes, chemicals, and shrinkage deformations. This insulation works great for basement insulation, but it is not advised to be used on wooden surfaces due to its low vapor permeability.

The most well-liked insulation brands among EPPS are Penoplex, Technonikol XPS, Styrofoam, TEPLEX, and URSA XPS. They are made in standard sizes of 1200 x 600 mm and 2400 x 600 mm, with slabs varying in thickness and density. As long as the laying technique is used, the material is easy to install, serves for roughly 50 years, and can withstand temperatures between -50 and +75 °C without losing its qualities.

Extrusion polystyrene foam Technonikol

Insulation made of Ursa XPS

One of the drawbacks is that insulation is combustible; practically all EPPS brands fall into the G3 and G4 flammability classes. Toxic substances are released by the material during melting.

The high cost is an additional drawback. However, with the start of the heating season, well-made thermal insulation rapidly recovers all costs.

Sprayed insulation

Basement insulation using FPU

Polyurethane foam insulates a house while also acting as a sound and heat barrier. It has outstanding adherence to all kinds of bases and can be used to insulate any part of the building, from the roof to the foundation. Its primary benefit is that there are no seams because the spraying process produces a strong, continuous coating.

Insulation in the basement that is seamless

It doesn’t take long to complete the insulation process because the material hardens in a matter of seconds.

The only challenge is that applying insulation calls for specialized installation and handling knowledge. Although hiring an expert and renting the installation are expensive, the benefit remains when you consider how long-lasting this type of insulation is. A 120 mm thick layer of EPPS is replaced with a 50 mm thick layer that is made of polyurethane foam with a density of 36 kg/m3, and it lasts for at least 50 years.

External basement and foundation insulation

expanded clay

ChicMe WWChicMe WW

Expanded clay is used extensively because of its low cost and high effectiveness in insulation, as it is several times more effective than sand due to its porosity. Expanded clay has very high thermal insulation properties, so even a thin layer will provide adequate insulation.

If the basement needs to be insulated during construction, prepared expanded clay needs to be poured into the formwork. The material is poured into the prepared trench if insulation is installed after construction is finished. Expanded clay and concrete should not be combined as this will not produce the intended outcome.

Although claydite is frequently used for floor insulation, because of its fragility, a layer of mineral wool and waterproofing film must be applied on top.

Internal insulation

Redmagic WWRedmagic WW

The upper portion of the basement must be covered with a horizontal layer of protection before the internal waterproofing can begin. You can insulate the basement’s upper and lower portions for an extra degree of security. The material should be placed roughly 20 to 30 centimeters away from the screed. Different membranes based on bitumen serve as the insulation material, but because of their low adhesive capacity, they must be replaced on a regular basis. Membrane films are an option if budget permits; they are more efficient and have better qualities.

Insulation that penetrates

Penetrating insulation is among the various kinds of waterproofing used inside. It consistently keeps the basement dry and warm.

It is true that penetrating waterproofing is the best insulation material available. Because of its easy penetration into the wall’s structure, this composition renders the concrete waterproof. Since this technique is so simple to use, one can achieve complete insulation on their own. It is also required to install vertical insulation from the inside if the groundwater table is high.

In this case, particular attention should be given to the location where the floor and basement are connected.

Here, the content could be:

  • geomembrane;
  • penetrating waterproofing;
  • liquid glass.

It is very difficult to perform interior work later on if waterproofing was not done during the construction phase. Because of the negative water pressure in this situation, standard roll and mastic insulation materials will not work.

Mixtures based on cement ought to be utilized. Leaks will need to be periodically removed, though. The effectiveness of external insulation will be significantly higher if internal insulation is completed in a competent and high-quality manner.

Finishing works

ChicMe WWChicMe WW

This is more of a decorative stage. It is best to plan the finished insulated basement before the insulation process even starts. If siding or wood paneling is to be used as a finishing material, you must first construct a sturdy batten building to the foundation itself.

To prevent rotting and mold growth, wooden bars must be impregnated with an anti-corrosion solution before use.

Crucial! It is advised to apply an extra layer of bituminous mastic or resin to the portion of the bar that is below ground and will come into contact with the earth. When expanded clay is used, the resulting screed needs to be carefully protected.

Experts advise utilizing a decorative mosaic or tile that is extremely resilient to natural occurrences for this purpose. It should be put in with an equal space between the tiles, which can be accomplished by utilizing unique tile crosses. They are removed once the adhesive solution has dried, and the resulting voids are sealed with a unique cement-based grout. Completing the insulated basement requires adding another layer of protection.

When expanded claydite is applied, the scarp that results needs to be carefully protected. Experts advise using decorative mosaic or tiles that are strong and resistant to natural occurrences for this purpose. It should be installed with specific tile crosses to ensure that there is an equal space between each tile. They are removed once the adhesive solution has dried, and the resulting voids are sealed using a unique cement-based grout. Finishing the insulated basement in this way suggests adding another layer of protection.

Excellent insulation work done on the basement (and especially the foundation) will result in a dependable warm home free from room condensation and the growth of unwelcome, health-threatening black mold. Naturally, using only high-quality, certified building materials is essential to success. Even though it seems insignificant at first, it frequently leads to the quick cracking of the insulated structures that have been built, further destroying the entire house.

Where to place the insulation outside or inside

ChicMe WWChicMe WW

The basement’s insulation during the foundation construction stage has the biggest impact; polystyrene foam fixed formwork can be used for this purpose. When applying the screed, this combination lowers the foundation’s cost. The insulation material keeps the walls from freezing and becoming wet when it is placed outside. By absorbing the negative effects of the surroundings, the insulation layer extends the private home’s safe operating life.

Select insulation from the inside if you went ahead and insulated the completed building and don’t want to carry out tiresome excavation work. By choosing this option, heat loss can be minimized and the unheated basement can be kept at a comfortable temperature.

Expanded clay fills the space if it is close to the first floor’s floor from the foundation. Boards made of polystyrene or foam are used as insulation for basement walls during construction. The leveled surface is coated with liquid waterproofing, which is followed by the application of adhesive insulation sheets as it solidifies. Foam is blown out of the joints between the boards. After the surface is completed, a layer of plaster is applied and a fiberglass mesh is attached. In addition to providing the insulation with a tidy appearance, the final coating will act as fire protection.

For homeowners, condensation within the basement presents a significant issue. Mold and fungus growth produce an unfavorable microclimate in the space. Moisture will accumulate between it and the wall and inside material won’t keep it from freezing. External insulation works better at keeping moisture off the surface. Loss of open space is yet another drawback of installing insulation from the inside. For pragmatic and expedient reasons, it is preferable to stop with the external insulation.

Compound insulation is used in homes constructed in challenging climates. Because it requires installing insulating materials on both sides of the basement, this method is more costly. Initially, polystyrene foam insulation is applied to the building’s exterior. A vapor barrier membrane is placed over the interior, and mineral wool is positioned in between the guide strips. Puttying and hanging drywall constitute the last finishing touches.

Choosing how to insulate the foundation from the inside

Redmagic WWVagamo US

Several considerations must guide the selection of a method:

  • The construction of the building, the size of the basement or semi-basement;
  • The presence of external insulation and temperature conditions on the outside of the foundation;
  • Type of soil and location of groundwater;
  • The required temperature regime in the basement after insulation, the availability of heating and ventilation;
  • The need for further decorative finishing.

Adding expanded clay to the subfloor cavity is a low-cost way to insulate the foundation from the inside. This substance dissipates moisture and generates an air cushion to shield the first floor from cooling. Both the entire area beneath the floor and the formwork that is positioned inside at a certain distance from the foundation walls can be filled.

If the basement is used for household premises, and its walls need not only insulation, but also in the finishing, it is advisable to use polystyrene or penoplex boards, which allow you to create a smooth coating, ready for cladding. The most qualitative and durable in this case will be the insulation of the foundation both outside and inside – by eliminating the temperature difference, you can avoid the formation of condensation on the inner walls of the basement. If insulation from the outside is not possible, it is necessary to perform: the concrete treated in this way is not subject to freezing, but retains vapor permeability, reducing moisture under the insulation slabs. It is also necessary to arrange supply and exhaust ventilation, as these materials do not let moisture through.

If you have the money, polyurethane foam insulation is a good option for any basement space because it works well.

The order of works

Redmagic WWRedmagic WW

Prior to insulating the home’s basement from the exterior, precisely determine how much material will be needed for:

  • thermal insulation;
  • waterproofing;
  • priming;
  • fixing.

A small reserve is used to buy each of them. For example, you will need to purchase extra boards with a total area of at least 3 m² when purchasing insulation for the foundation’s basement.

Before insulating the building’s basement from the outside, one must first carefully prepare the surface, which calls for the following supplies:

  • clean it from possible contaminants;
  • remove destroyed fragments;
  • widen the detected gaps and cracks;
  • apply a layer of primer composition characterized by deep penetration. Learn more about insulation in this video:

The surface integrity of the basement’s exterior can then be restored by preparing a mixture. Cement-sand plaster works best, and assembly foam works well for plugging in large gaps and cracks.

It is possible to independently insulate a private home’s basement by avoiding the use of sprayed polyurethane foam and arranging polystyrene foam to form the insulated surface of the basement from the exterior.

Styrofoam can be used if preferred, but it is preferable to insulate the basement by installing Penoplex (expanded Polystyrene Foam) plates on it in an attempt to give it complete protection.

Since Styrofoam cannot guarantee high-quality protection against moisture, rodents, fungus, and mold, many private homeowners choose penoplex when determining which material is best to accomplish the purpose and layout of an insulated basement.

Plaster the basement level.

The exterior insulation installation necessitates meticulous surface leveling. The beacons are used to guide the placement of the first plaster layer for this reason. The above-foundation portion of the house’s leveled wall should be primed after it has dried completely before the reinforcing mesh is fixed. This stage is unique in that you must understand the proper way to lay the mesh that will be used for reinforcement.

The fabric is divided into individual pieces after its dimensions were previously established. This ensures that there is overlap when the mesh is laid, and its upper and lower edges stay free to be utilized for reinforcing the outer layer of thermal insulation. Thus, the thermal insulation appears to be wrapped by the reinforcing mesh.

Installing gizhroizolyatsionatsiya is a requirement before basement insulation can be completed.

Using adhesive composition, which is also used to secure foam boards or a thin layer of plaster mixture, the grid is fastened to the leveled basement. Knotting is not necessary for secure anchorage. When laying overlapping strips, it is done. Because air can seep between the layers of the insulation pie, every node may result in subpar fastening.

We apply the adhesive composition—which may be foam cement or a unique combination—to the tiles and firmly press them to the basement’s surface. The fixing process takes a few seconds to complete. The basement must then be insulated by installing foamlex boards on its surface around the building’s whole perimeter.

Further plastering and fixation are the following steps. The upper and lower edges of the reinforcing mesh should be overlapped and secured with plastic mushrooms to achieve this:

  • Drill a hole in the foamlex board;
  • hammer the dowel fungus;
  • screw in.

A second layer of plaster mixture is applied to the carefully laid grid, and it is grouted. The basement’s completion represents the last phase. For this, you can use ceramic tiles, plastic panels, or faux stone. Watch this video for additional information on installing insulation:

After all the work is done and the proper insulation is installed, a private home can be made comfortable, energy costs can be significantly reduced, and the building’s lifespan can be increased.

Insulating the foundation from the outside

ChicMe WWChicMe WW

Is the foundation’s external thermal insulation an unnecessary expense and a waste of time and money?

Without a doubt not. Both the interior and exterior of the foundation need to be insulated. The foundation of the house loses between 20 and 25 percent of its heat. However, not all private home owners believe that insulating the foundation is essential, particularly if they don’t use the basement. And for nothing, as proper exterior foundation insulation greatly lowers heat loss, lowers basement humidity, and greatly extends the life of the foundation—and consequently, the entire house.

Since it is simpler to insulate the basement from the inside, why is external foundation insulation more crucial? In this instance, it is simple to perform minor repairs and you can keep an eye on the insulation’s condition. You can’t see what will happen to the soil-covered outer layer after several seasons of ground movements caused by frost heave.

Still, it’s a tenuous argument. The basement is well-insulated against low temperatures. However, in the absence of external protection, the materials used to make the foundation will be subjected to all the damaging effects of both water and cold. Concrete is a material that will absorb moisture because of its capillary structure. Water expands by approximately 9% of its volume at freezing, so the concrete will eventually start to crumble and lose its strength. In foundations of this kind, the protective layer of working reinforcement is 50 mm. When microcracks reach the reinforcement, corrosion starts, and the process of the foundation’s disintegration keeps getting worse.

A brief explanation of the necessity of the foundation’s external insulation:

  • insulating the foundation from the outside will protect it from freezing and destruction. The dew point shifts towards the insulation, which is much more efficient in dealing with cold and moisture compared to a concrete mass
  • When using insulation of any kind, external thermal insulation prevents freezing of the foundation and creates a barrier to negative temperatures
  • external thermal insulation protects the concrete, preserving its qualities, and ensures the specified strength of the foundation structure for a long time
  • external thermal insulation works in conjunction with waterproofing, protecting the foundation from capillary moisture and groundwater
  • external thermal insulation provides a barrier to seasonal temperature differences that occur in basement rooms

However, in situations where the house has already been constructed without foundation thermal insulation and external insulation is not feasible, the only option is to insulate the interior of the building.

Basement insulating materials

Construction supplies for insulating

1. Foam. It is constructed from steam-treated polystyrene granules, which swell, sinter, and become saturated with air. Styrofoam is inexpensive, lightweight, and has good thermal insulation—it doesn’t require a vapor barrier. Its drawbacks include its high rodent affinity, poor mechanical strength—particularly when bending—and combustibility.

2. Polystyrene foam that is extruded. It is made from melted polystyrene granules that are extruded through an extruder die while an inert gas foams at the same time. A structure with numerous closed, gas-filled cells is the end result. PE has a unique moisture resistance due to structural features (it actually does not absorb water). It can endure for a very long time without losing functionality because it is resistant to biological deterioration. Among other heat insulators, it was an even more sought-after material due to its chemical stability, mechanical strength, environmental friendliness, and fire resistance.

3. Because of its hygroscopic nature, mineral wool is a bad option for basement insulation because it gets wet from frequent precipitation and loses its insulating qualities.

Use polyurethane foam, coarse-grade keramzit slabs, and other specialized materials for the house’s basement insulation as well.

Insulating externally the foundation

Building construction gains a dependable defense against freezing thanks to the exterior treatment of the foundation against cold weather. This is so that the foundation will not be impacted by the below-freezing temperatures; only the insulation will. It increases the house’s base’s resistance to frost by a factor of ten, and it also makes the house itself more secure against harsh or unpredictable weather.

The importance of waterproofing of basement floors

Stylewe WWStylewe WW

The temperature changes and harsh weather conditions that the basement faces are a major burden. As a result, it needs trustworthy defense, such as insulation both inside and outside and waterproofing. The length of time the building is in use directly affects their quality.

Typically, unique porous slabs known as FBS (block wall foundation) are used to build the foundation. If it is not adequately protected, the damaging effects of atmospheric moisture will eventually cause the steel reinforcement to break down, the building to sag, and the monolith to crumble.

Furthermore, a soaked basement is the reason for persistent mold growth and moisture on the walls and floor, which is unacceptable for preserving the house’s healthy atmosphere.

How to insulate the basement of the house from the outside, from the inside

Redmagic WWRedmagic WW

One can install thermal insulation from the interior or the exterior. Because it keeps the basement from freezing, exterior insulation made of foam or penoplex is more dependable. Expanded polystyrene shields buildings from extreme cold, and if extruded polystyrene is utilized, its waterproofing properties will be enhanced. Extrusion is a vapor-proof material that keeps its qualities in a moist atmosphere.

Picture: Foam plex insulation in the basement of a wooden house

How to insulate the basement of the house with foam plex

Extrusion is a foamed polystyrene insulation material with air in closed cells (penoplex and technoplex). Although extruded polystyrene foam is a very light material, the boards have enough strength to support large mechanical loads. Foamplex has low heat conductivity, zero vapor permeability, and UV resistance because the material’s cells are closed.

It will be necessary to level the basement, remove all dust and debris, and waterproof the area before beginning any work. Foamlex boards are cut to the proper size before being laid on the basement floor using mounting foam or dry mix. To prevent the appearance of cold bridges in the structure, assembly foam should be used to seal the joints between the boards. As we have already discussed, there are two ways to lay insulation: from the inside or the outside.

Picture: Foam plastic insulation for the house’s gutters and basement

How to insulate the basement of the house with foam plastic

Do not overlook the previously mentioned surface preparation before applying the plate insulation. On top of the assembly foam, foam plates are arranged closely to one another. Every joint that exists between the boards ought to be fully foamed. Since foam plastic absorbs moisture, it needs extra protection from precipitation, melting snow, and ground moisture. The best choice would be to cover the basement’s exterior with PVC or base siding.

The basement will look nicer and the insulation will be shielded from mechanical damage by cladding made of panels or siding. A video with comprehensive instructions on how to complete the work independently is added at the end of the article. Keep in mind that UV light should be shielded from the mounting foam right away. The mounting foam degrades rapidly in the presence of sunlight, lowering the house’s brick basement’s insulation value.

Preparatory work

ChicMe WWChicMe WW

It is essential to make all the necessary preparations before beginning to insulate the basement.

It’s crucial to prepare the surface in addition to buying the chosen material and choosing the appropriate tools and fasteners. Should you lack the knowledge to accurately execute each step, you should acquaint yourself with these three fundamental concepts, as they will be adequate for productive work.

In order to prepare a trench that is up to half a meter wide (the depth is individual), one must go deep in the first stage. The wall must be thoroughly cleaned of dirt, debris, and even dust in the second stage. In order to protect the wall from moisture at the third stage, waterproofing is done (e.g. with bituminous mastic).

Before installing insulation, any noticeable imperfections on the wall should be fixed. Applying two coats of waterproofing involves letting the first coat dry completely before applying the second coat on top of it.

Types of pipes

Geekbuying WWGeekbuying WW

Polypropylene

Benefits

  • Cheapness of pipes and fittings;
  • Simple installation using low-temperature socket welding;
  • Long service life on cold water and, to a lesser extent, on hot water (50 and 25 years respectively);
  • Extremely low hydraulic resistance of the water supply system due to smooth walls.
  • High elongation of pipes when heated, requiring the installation of expansion joints on long straight sections;

However, the coefficient of linear expansion of fiber- and foil-reinforced polypropylene pipes used in hot water is significantly lower than that of unreinforced polypropylene.

  • Decrease of resource and maximum allowable pressure when heated above 70-75°C;
  • Bends of the water pipe are possible only due to the use of fittings. Pipe is supplied in straight sections and installed in straight sections.

Use:

  1. HTW water pipes – no restrictions.
  2. DHW pipelines – except for those connected to open heating systems (with technical hot water supplied from the heating mains).

Metalloplastic

  • Simple installation on compression fittings, requiring primitive hand tools (pipe cutter, calibrator and a pair of wrenches);

  • Durability (the same 50 years on cold water and at least 25 on hot water);
  • Can be installed with a bend, reducing the need for relatively expensive fittings.

Unique characteristics: Connections are sensitive to installation quality, particularly on compression fittings. After a few heating and cooling cycles, trying to attach an unevenly cut and uncalibrated pipe to a fitting will undoubtedly result in hot water leaks. Uses: The same restrictions and uses apply as they do for polypropylene.

Galvanizing

Benefits

  • Unlike black steel water and gas pipe, galvanized pipe does not rust and does not overgrow deposits;
  • It perfectly tolerates overheating up to the theoretically possible in an open heating system maximum of +150 degrees, pressure surges and hydrostroke up to 50 atmospheres;
  • With a claimed service life on water supply of 30 years, galvanized pipe lasts at least twice that long. At any rate, galvanized pipe plumbing in homes built in the 60"s is still in excellent condition today.

Strangeities: Only threaded fittings allow galvanized pipe to be installed, requiring time-consuming manual thread cutting and spigot and bend size adjustments. The biggest mistake is to mount galvanizing by welding, which robs the metal of all its benefits over black steel because the zinc burns out completely around the weld, leaving the metal exposed to deposits and rust.

Corrugated stainless steel

Benefits

  • Highest strength (breaking pressure – more than 200 atmospheres);
  • Resistance to high temperatures (maximum permissible +150 ° C, and the temperature is limited not by the pipe itself, but by the thermal resistance of silicone sealing rings in the fittings);
  • Flexibility of the pipe, which dramatically simplifies installation and allows you to minimize the number of fitting connections;

  • Speaking of connections: the fitting is put on the pipe with a pair of adjustable wrenches in 30 seconds. In addition to wrenches, from the tool you will need a roller pipe cutter for cutting the elements of the water pipe to length.

Characteristics: comparatively high cost per linear meter (at 100 rubles for a 15 mm diameter, compared to 70–80 rubles for galvanized VGP pipe).

5. Polyurethane foam for basement insulation

Redmagic WWRedmagic WW

Regarding its performance attributes, polyurethane foam can be rightfully referred to as the perfect insulator. Utilizing specialized equipment, the material is applied in a way that creates carbon dioxide and polymer synthesis by mixing polyol and isocyanate under pressure. The latter produces separate bubbles from one another. The basement has been prepped before a thin layer of spraying is applied.

Benefits

  • High thermal insulation properties, which are provided in particular thanks to carbon dioxide bubbles, because its thermal conductivity coefficient is lower than that of air;
  • resistance to mold and fungus;
  • monolithic layer of insulation, filling all cracks and defects, no seams;
  • strength, rigidity, elasticity and lightness of the material;
  • high repairability. In case of anything, the damaged area can be patched with a new portion of polymer;
  • high speed of work – basement insulation is carried out within one day.

The high cost of the material and the need for specialized tools, reagents, and handling expertise to complete the task independently are among the drawbacks. Furthermore, the insulation is photosensitive, so it’s best to try to complete the facade as soon as feasible.

Choice of waterproofing method depending on the construction of the basement

Italojewerly WWItalojewerly WW

Every component of the home has an architectural, semantic, and functional load. The basement is actually a component of the foundation. Certain building types have a conditional division and a monolithic foundation. Although technically this element can be a single structure with the foundation, unlike the latter, which requires a decorative finish, it is generally accepted that the basement is the part of the house located between the upper boundary of the soil and the floor level.

The following are the purposes of the basement:

  • the basis of the load-bearing part of the house. Walls, floor slabs or lags rest on the basement;
  • protection against moisture penetration;
  • is part of the basement structure;
  • increases the energy efficiency of the house, as it reliably protects the structure from the cold ground, with which direct contact is excluded;
  • as a visible part of the facade plays an architectural and aesthetic role.

Because the lower portion of the building forms the foundation of the structure and subsequent operation is dependent upon its shape, material, and installation technology, the design of the building takes note of the unique features of this area.

Basements are typically classified into three categories based on how they are positioned in relation to the house’s wall:

  • Falling. The front plane of the basement is shifted inward and is located under the main wall of the house. Technologically the most optimal way in terms of protecting the building from moisture. Waterproofing of the basement of the foundation is covered with load-bearing structures of the house and less than in other types is exposed to external forces;
  • Protruding. The facade of the house with this type of plinth gives the appearance of the facade thoroughness and visual reliability. Having chosen this option, it is necessary to emphasize the installation of waterproofing of the basement from the outside, since it is open to direct exposure to solar radiation, rain, hail and snow;
  • In one plane with the wall. The variant does not differ much from the previous type in terms of functional characteristics. Requires serious measures to ensure the reliable protection of the building.

A structural solution is selected based on the tasks involved in building the house’s exterior. However, it is important to waterproof the basement as much as possible from the outside. An external layer of moisture protection is constructed on top of insulation, if any is offered.

Not all interior surfaces have insulation. It is carried out when necessary, such as when the ground floor or basement is unfavorably utilized as a workshop or service room. There are other reasons besides groundwater seepage. When the basement is utilized as a swimming pool or sauna, internal waterproofing is completed.

Varieties of basements

It is advised to insulate using non-hygroscopic materials, like polystyrene foam boards. Although mineral wool is not the ideal choice, this technique is acceptable when used with the right protection. One drawback of materials that are absorbent is that they may get wet or freeze during the winter.

Because mineral wool can retain moisture for an extended period of time beneath decorative cladding, this will place a significant load on the foundation and basement structure.

Accurate geodetic data on the seasonal variations in the water table are essential when building a basement for a specific purpose. It will be easier to accurately determine the waterproofing technology of the structure by consulting with neighbors and gathering information from the regional bodies of Gosgeologiya.

Modern home design projects offer the highest degree of comfort to their owners. A billiard room or home theater is increasingly common in daily life. Equipping rooms with this orientation in the main housing area is inefficient. Consequently, they are frequently relocated to a semi-basement or basement.

If a rational solution is found for this issue, the basement’s usable space can be increased while maintaining a level of comfort comparable to the upper floor thanks to excellent waterproofing and insulation.

There are many high-quality materials available on the market today that provide the required level of protection. This category offers a wide range of products that let you create a space with specific features.

The waterproofing layer is visible beneath the sheet polystyrene foam insulation in the basement.

The room can be used as a living space when the highest level of protection—where effective thermal insulation is provided—is offered. The cold cellar is an ideal place to keep goods. An area for wine connoisseurs with controlled humidity and temperature.

Step Details
1. Clear the Floor Remove all dirt, debris, and loose materials from the basement floor. It should be clean and smooth before starting any waterproofing work.
2. Apply a Sealant Use a waterproof sealant or primer to create a protective barrier on the floor. This helps prevent moisture from seeping through the concrete.
3. Install a Vapor Barrier Lay a high-quality plastic sheet or polyethylene film over the entire floor, making sure to cover the edges. This acts as an additional layer to prevent moisture from rising.
4. Seal the Joints Use waterproof tape or sealant to secure the seams and edges of the vapor barrier. Ensure there are no gaps or overlaps where moisture could penetrate.
5. Add a Protective Layer Cover the vapor barrier with a layer of rigid insulation or cement backer board to protect it and improve insulation.

An essential first step in keeping your house dry and free of moisture-related problems is waterproofing the basement floor. In addition to guarding against leaks, proper waterproofing also helps avoid mold, mildew, and structural damage. For the best results, make sure you select the appropriate materials and adhere to the suggested procedures when you plan and carry out your basement waterproofing project.

Begin by evaluating the state of your basement and locating any problems that are currently present, like leaks or cracks. It is advisable to fix these before using waterproofing materials. Next, pick premium items made especially for waterproofing basements. This could include coatings, sealants, or membranes that act as a moisture barrier. Apply the product according to the manufacturer’s instructions, being mindful of any extra steps—like priming—and the necessary curing times.

After applying the waterproofing materials, make sure your basement stays dry by taking extra precautions. This may entail putting in sump pumps, installing appropriate drainage systems, and enhancing ventilation. By taking these precautions, any remaining moisture in the basement is managed and kept from causing damage.

The success of waterproofing over the long term also depends on routine maintenance and inspection. Periodically inspect your basement for indications of moisture or damage, and take quick action to fix any problems you find. Later on, this proactive approach can help you avoid wasting time, money, or stress.

Waterproofing your basement floor can be an easy and efficient way to safeguard your house, provided you plan and carry out the process correctly. You can have a dry and cozy basement for many years to come if you follow these instructions and maintain your basement on a regular basis.
