You don’t have to wait for someone to arrive and solve the issue in the first instance. Therefore, installing a filter is simpler and quicker if you can’t stand the smelly water.

An alternative method of resolving boiler microorganism issues is:

  1. Sterilize the tank. The water in the boiler is brought to a boil and remains in this state for a long time.

  • If limescale is still deposited on the sides, it is recommended to wash the tank with a prepared solution of citric acid, vinegar or chemical agent with a cloth. Then rinse with running water.
  • The removed heating element must first be cleaned from a thick layer of scale by mechanical means, e.g. by scraping off the dirt with a knife. Then immerse the heating element in the prepared solution for about twenty-four hours.

For this process, a plastic bottle with the neck cut off works best. Next, give it a good rinse with fresh water. The heating element will be like new after cleaning.

Need for cleaning

The secret to the water heater’s excellent and long-lasting performance is routine cleaning. The poor dissolution of cleaning agents in hard water leads to the formation of limescale, which decreases heat conductivity. The procedure is divided into two parts: cleaning the water heater’s storage tank and heating element.

You must disassemble the water heater in order to clean it mechanically from scale. After unplugging the device from the mains, start the disassembly process:

  • First close the cold water tap, then disconnect the pipe from the boiler connection;
  • empty the storage tank through the faucet or an additional drain cock;
  • disconnect the DHW pipe from the boiler connection;
  • remove the lower decorative cover by unscrewing all self-tapping screws;
  • If the handle of the mechanical thermostat is protruding, it should also be removed;
  • use a screwdriver to unscrew the contacts that clamp the power supply cable;
  • The heater is removed from the wall and placed upside down in the bathtub;
  • The flange with the TEN and thermostat are unscrewed, removed from the tank, and then proceed to mechanical cleaning.

When dismantling boilers, every company follows essentially the same procedure. There might be slight differences in how the decorative cover and the flange are fixed.

Tools and instruments for cleaning

You’ll need the following tools to remove scale from the water heater:

  • adjustable and a set of wrenches;
  • straight and shaped screwdriver;
  • pliers;
  • knife, sandpaper.

Descaling cleaners are purchased from the store. Citric acid is used to prepare the solution by dissolving 500 g of crystals in 2 liters of water. You can dilute 40 ml of vinegar in the same volume of water as you would citric acid.

Cleaners from the store may damage the boiler’s rubber seals. It is important to carefully read the instructions on the package before using the solution.

Cleaning the heating element

The first time someone disassembles a heater, they often don’t know how to clean the heating element without breaking it. This work requires caution. First of all, the water heater’s heating element is a wet and dry type that needs to be cleaned in two different ways.

Wet heating element

Knife scraping is a mechanical method of descale the heater. Using pliers, crush thick growths, then use sandpaper to remove the remaining material. Avoid overdoing it to prevent the heating element’s copper sheath from being harmed.

The gaskets need to be closely inspected when reassembling the water heater. Although they’ve been thoroughly cleaned of dirt, it’s best to purchase new ones.

How to clean the boiler algorithm of actions

  1. Disconnect the water heater from the power supply.
  2. Drain the water.
  3. Clean the boiler.
  4. Assemble and connect.

Unplugging and draining the water

Turn off the automatic circuit breaker and unplug the thermostat’s wires in order to disconnect the water heater from the local power source. You can then go ahead and empty the water.

  2. Open the valve to drain the water. To do this, use a bucket, basin or run a hose to the bathtub (depending on the location of the boiler). If the volume of the tank is 100 liters, then drain 30 liters.
  3. Put a watering can on the free end of the hose.
  4. In a separate container, dilute 500 g of citric acid. Fill with 2 liters of boiling hot water.
  5. Raise the water level above the level of water that was drained and pour citric acid solution with a ladle.
  6. Shut off all faucets where there is a drain. Open the cold water valve.
  7. Turn on the heating and leave it for 4 hours.
  8. After the time has elapsed, drain all the water.
  9. Flush the tank several times.

It is important to monitor the quantity of citric acid and water. The solution will be thicker if the liquid volume is smaller. It will find it difficult to get through the boiler’s pipe.

Prevention of scale formation

It is advised to use a variety of descaling agents to lessen the need for frequent water heater cleanings.

Reagent filters come in a range of forms and contain chemical compounds in the cleaning cartridge that, when combined with salts of hardness, soften water.

You can drastically lessen the amount of scale that forms inside the boiler by cleaning or replacing the cleaning cartridges on time.

Additionally, there is a noticeable decrease in plaque density, making mechanical cleaning of the heating element easier.

The reagent-free filter works by producing a strong electromagnetic field, which causes the dissolved hardness salts in the water to change shape and avoid building up inside the heater. This process also helps the filter self-clean from the scale that has already formed.

Reagent-free filters are costly, and their drawback is that they need a lot of water to operate at optimal efficiency. It is therefore unfit for usage in a household.

How to clean a boiler from limescale

The main issue with water heaters is limescale. It needs to be taken out on time. But how can a boiler be cleaned at home? Taking care of the water tanks and heating elements (cleaning them) involves similar labor.

1. After removing the heating element from the appliance, clean it. Let’s go about it like this.

  • Remove large pieces of scale with a kitchen knife, protect the surface by rubbing off the residual small flecks with sandpaper.
  • If it is not possible to clean the heating element mechanically, it can be soaked in water with dissolved citric acid powder. The tank can be a plastic bottle with a pre-cut neck.
  • After complete cleaning, wash the heating element with running water.

2. Empty the tank. You must examine the tank before attempting to descal the interior of it. A standard water rinse should be sufficient if the inside of the tank has not been significantly damaged by the limescale. You should be ready for the possibility that the removed heating element will be damaged during the inspection process and will need to be replaced if the water heater is cleaned inconsistently. Consequently, it is preferable to have a fresh heating element and magnesium anode ready in advance.

Descaling agents for water heaters

As is the case with indirect boilers, cleaning water heaters can occasionally be labor-intensive due to a variety of factors. It is difficult to remove the copper heat exchanger. Cleaning the water heater is a difficult task, even with traditional large-capacity heaters.   • Together with the electric heating element, pull out the flange as well.

You can now move on to the cleaning of the heating element, which is the next step.

Keep in mind that the magnesium anode, which is close to the electric heating element, is prone to harm. Never use force to get rid of sharp metal objects or scale.

Scratching the anode could render it useless. It is common practice to replace the magnesium anode with a new one while cleaning the heating element. However, it is possible for the anode to become detached from the tank, in which case the entire heating element needs to be replaced.

Types of water heaters

There is a vast array of water heaters available on the market today. The two primary categories of all this abundance are flow-through and storage.

A heating element that simultaneously heats the water it passes through is called a flow-through water heater. Gas or electricity are used for heating, depending on the heat source. Consequently, gas or electric flow boilers are available.

The flow heater’s operating principle

When a boiler or storage water heater is turned on, hot water is not produced right away. The way it works is that the liquid first goes into a big, insulated tank, where it is heated gradually. The system keeps the temperature at that setting once it reaches it. Boilers can be used for indirect heating, gas, or electricity. The latter uses a liquid coolant that is removed from the heating system to warm the water. These boilers are frequently paired with an electric, gas, or solid fuel boiler.

The operation of an electric water heater

Avoid purchasing boilers with a black, galvanized heating element to reduce the frequency of malfunctions. These materials rust more easily and do not heat the water very well. There are multiple sequential steps in the boiler cleaning process.

The process of draining the water

The appliance’s water must be drained before you begin cleaning. If the boiler is situated above the bathtub, you can place a container there and remove the liquid while the heating element is being removed. Two operations can be done at once if the heating element is placed inside the tank. To empty the water, do the following:

  1. Disconnect the water heater from the mains (it is desirable to do this in advance, so that the device cools down), close the water set tap.
  2. Shut off the cold water, open the hot water at the nearest faucet and wait for it to drain away.

Another method of draining water is by using the safety valve. Disconnecting the hot water pipe and placing a container underneath it is required. Turn the valve loose gradually to let the water out.

Preparatory step before cleaning

You can perform the relatively easy task of cleaning the boiler on your own. Once the liquid has been completely drained, you must open the tank and remove the tenon. How is the boiler disassembled? The decorative cover must be removed first; it is fastened with screws. On certain models, the required components are secured with clamps behind a plastic panel. You must carefully pry the bar with a screwdriver in order to remove it.

To ensure that everything is correctly assembled after cleaning, photos of the wiring layout must be taken. After that, unplug the cables. To remove the thermostat, you must first be able to access it.

Remove the heating element with caution. A magnesium anode next to it keeps the interior of the tank from corroding.

Cleaning of the heating element from limescale

As soon as the heating element is removed, clean it. This is because it is much simpler to remove wet scale than dry scale. The heating element can be cleaned using a variety of techniques:

  1. Mechanical. Assumes manual cleaning of the heating element. It should be carried out with a knife, screwdriver or a hard brush. Act with extreme caution so as not to damage the integrity of the heating element. After removing the layer of scale, the surface should be treated with emery cloth.

Cleaning the heating tank

Cleaning the heating element is not as crucial as flushing the heating tank. A variety of coatings can be applied to the tank’s interior surface. Titanium is the most resilient and impervious to rust and corrosion. It is essential to place a bucket beneath the tank’s opening in order to clean it. After that, wait until the liquid is clear before opening the cold water supply to rinse the tank.

When there is significant soiling, descaling has to be done by hand. Abrasive or hard objects are not to be used as this could damage the enamel coating. Avoid touching the magnesium anode as this could cause damage, necessitating the purchase of a new one. When you need to clean the water heater

Consequently, you can easily identify this device at the early stages of its strange behavior if you pay a little more attention to how it operates. What alarming bells are thus already present?

  • The water heater has been working regularly for a long time (from 0.5 years and more), but you have never cleaned it once. If this is the case, you can definitely start cleaning it immediately – you will find a lot of interesting things inside.
  • The device has started to turn on and off very often. At the same time, the water does not heat up to the temperature set by you. This indicates that both the heating element and the tank are "overgrown" with limescale. The heating element simply does not have time to heat the entire volume of liquid to the specified mark, and the overheating protection has already triggered.
  • Heating water takes much longer than before. This affects the drop in efficiency.
  • You hear a hissing noise when the heater is working.
  • Your energy consumption has increased significantly. This is probably one of the most unpleasant consequences of a neglected boiler condition. It simply has to consume more energy.

Cleaning the heating tank

As previously stated, cleaning the heating tank is not required at all, but if you choose to do so, carefully adhere to the guidelines provided below. First things first, get the required equipment ready:

  • screwdrivers (2 pcs.);
  • Chemical cleaning agent;
  • ring wrench;
  • protective equipment – gloves, goggles, respirator.

This cleaning process is broken down into four steps.

First, let the water out.

  1. Disconnect the appliance from the power supply.
  2. Shut off the water.
  3. Disconnect the supply line.
  4. Connect a rubber hose to the return valve.

It is preferable to take the boiler out of the wall if at all possible. Working with it will be more convenient, and the device’s electrical wiring won’t be overloaded. Next, place it "upside down"—that is, with the taps facing down—on the floor. Make sure to dry the appliance’s electrical wiring after the work is done if removing the boiler from the wall is not possible! For this, a hair dryer can be used.
