What is a master – flash?

The assembly of the chimney’s roof-through passage is complicated because it has to adhere to several specifications:

  • resistance to high temperature of the chimney;

The ideal roofing assembly must be elastic because the various boiler modes cause the pipe surface to change in temperature. This causes the material to expand during heating and contract during cooling. All of these conditions are satisfied by the master flush, also known as the passageway, rat, or otter, and the elastic chimney seal.

The element consists of an elastic material base that is square or rectangular in shape, with a central ring that has a varying diameter. The rings protrude in the shape of a cone either straight up or at an angle. An aluminum insert can be added to the Master-flush in order to strengthen the foundation.

How to install a master flush?

You can safely buy and install a direct master-flush if your roof is flat, following the installation instructions. This also holds true for sloped roofs composed of metal roofing without cross joints or profiled sheet. When installing, keep in mind these suggestions:

  • it is better to coat the surface of the chimney and the ring of the product with a soap solution to facilitate pulling;
  • If the hole is cut unsuccessfully, do not rush to throw away the master – flush. It may be possible to cover it hermetically with a clamp;
  • use only waterproof sealant;
  • do not screw on too many self-tapping screws. The sealant will sooner or later start to lose its insulating properties and water will start to flow through many holes. Do not screw self-tapping screws into recesses of the roofing where water flows;
  • when installing the roofline on the ridge for the chimney, be sure to place the top of the roofline under the ridge lap as shown below:

The top portion of the master flush base should attempt to slide under the closest overhead element of coverage if the pitched roofing material (such as slate, ondulin, sheet metal roofing, asphalt shingles, and so forth) has a discontinuous structure with overlaps. This way, no matter how firmly the roof cap is glued, you can guarantee the free flow of water. This connection will endure a great deal longer, as evidenced by the photo’s proper execution:

It appears that not every chimney can accommodate the installation of a master flush due to the maximum operating temperature of silicone and rubber products. Yes, in these situations the kraza will feel extremely comfortable.

  • on a pipe made of insulated sandwich;
  • on a steel chimney without insulation, connected to a gas condensing boiler (temperature up to 100 ºC).

In regular operation, uninsulated stove and solid fuel boiler chimneys can reach temperatures of up to 150 ºC; in certain extreme circumstances, such as when soot burns in the pipe, they can reach temperatures of up to 600 ºC. You see, the rubber may even catch fire when the roofing comes into contact with such a surface; it will just melt. Here’s how the issue can be resolved: First, a sleeve is chosen from a thin-walled pipe that can be up to half a meter long and whose diameter is 100–120 mm greater than the chimney.

The gas duct is covered with a sleeve and wrapped in basalt fiber at the roof’s penetration point. The latter can be constructed from standard galvanized roofing steel and covered in a layer of thermal insulation. The master-flush for chimneys is installed on the sleeve’s diameter to ensure that it is consistently shielded from high temperatures. Regarding the insulation-filled joint that is exposed from above, it can be covered with an edge made of galvanized metal and secured with a clamp.

Advice: It is worthwhile to lay this portion of the sandwich or insulate the entire chimney initially in order to avoid having to worry about thermal insulation of the pipe when installing the master-flush.

Galvanized steel "plates" without a bottom can also be used to shield silicone products from direct sunlight. These components are either independently made or sold ready-made. It is easy to place the metal "plate," as seen in the photo below, over the pipe and cap; the key is to choose the inner diameter carefully so that it doesn’t hang out in the wind.
