Floor insulation technologies

There are two different ways that Isolon can be installed on a floor.

One variation involves combining isolon insulation with another type of insulation, usually minwool. phases of the project:

  • Removal of the old floor covering and cleaning of the floor substrate.

4 Preparatory work before laying insolon

  1. High price. The technology of production of insulation on the basis of foamed polyethylene, especially with an additional heat-reflecting layer, does not allow to reduce the cost price. Therefore, the use of Isolon significantly increases the estimated cost of construction and many specialists refuse it in favor of cheaper options.
  2. The need for ventilation of the reflective layer. When using foil insulated isolon for insulation of building envelopes, it is necessary to create a ventilation gap to remove condensable moisture. Its thickness is from 2 to 3 cm, which significantly increases the insulation pie (it is especially critical if the insulation is insulated with isolon from the inside).
  3. Low durability. Insulation is very easy to tear at external impact. Especially if it has an additional layer of aluminum foil. And if the integrity is broken, its efficiency is very much reduced.
  4. Possible corrosion of aluminum. If the thermal insulation is constantly operated in conditions of high humidity, partial corrosion of the heat-reflecting layer is possible. However, any insulator has its allotted service life, including foil foamed polyethylene.

Isolon works really well for adding more layers of waterproofing and heat-reflecting material, in my opinion. However, it can only be used in specific circumstances as a stand-alone material to stop heat loss.

Features of the material

Isolon can be used to insulate air conditioning systems, water supply or heat supply systems, vehicle cargo spaces, refrigeration plants, and other industrial sectors where extra insulation is needed (such as for pipelines).

Due to the high demand for various insulating materials in the construction industry, it is also utilized quite frequently.

In addition to being able to be used as a stand-alone insulator (Isolon can be used in wooden houses), this insulator can also be used as an independent one for practically any type of building, from hangars to small residential spaces. It can be used for floors, walls, and roofs.

Another soundproofing method is Isolon. While soundproofing is the primary goal, this option is obviously not the best one to solve the problem, but it will still partially mask the noise.

Since Penofol and Isolon share many technological similarities and are also used for household purposes (such as a tent mat), it is accepted to determine which is used.

Varieties of isolon

Because PPE isolon insulators are stronger, more resilient to moisture, and more heat and sound-resistant than NPE, they are used in individual construction and are more resistant to aggressive substances. Consequently, there is only one answer to the question of whether or not it is possible to insulate a house with Isolon: it is.

There are foil insulating materials accessible:

  1. Mark "A" – the material is protected by aluminum foil only on one side, the thickness of insulation – 3-10 mm;
  2. Isolon "B" has a double-sided foil coating;
  3. PPE "C" – material on a self-adhesive basis;

Isolon Types

  8. Low rates of moisture absorption and vapor permeability;
  9. Easy and quick installation: the material is attached either to staples with a stapler, to self-tapping screws or to a self-adhesive base. Also firmly held on the usual silicone adhesive;
  10. Environmentally friendly and safe for human health material, does not emit toxic substances.

Using isolon to insulate the interior of the house

  1. Wholesale and retail costs are slightly higher than minwool, expanded polystyrene or shells. But this disadvantage is overridden by the quality and efficiency of the insulation;
  2. All stages of handling the material (storage, transportation and installation) require care not to damage the thin aluminum foil;

Every isolon brand and variety has undergone quality, fire, hygienic, and environmental standards testing.

Where in the home isolon can be applied

Options for mounting isolon

The issues surrounding heat preservation apply to both multi-story apartments and country homes. Though there are some subtle differences, the insulation techniques here are essentially the same.

Wall insulation

Devices and tools required for the task include:

  • wooden laths;
  • screwdriver and electric drill;
  • furniture stapler.

The following order is followed throughout the entire process.

  1. Wooden laths with a cross-section of 20 × 40 mm are vertically installed and fixed to the walls using dowel nails. The distance between the laths – no more than 0.9 m.
  2. To avoid preliminary preparation of the walls, pieces of plywood or fiberboard are placed under the laths, thus leveling the construction on the level.
  3. Isolon cloth is fixed with one edge to one of the laths, then stretched and fastened to the next one with a stapler. Work continues until all wall surfaces are covered.
  4. The joints of neighboring fabrics are sealed with a wide adhesive tape.

Insulating the floor with isolon

When placed underneath laminate or parquet flooring, this material can function as a substrate. This simultaneously insulates the floor and enhances sound insulation. The use of vapor barrier materials is not required. When combined with the "warm floor" system, foil insulation works well because only the heat energy in the foil layer is radiated into the room by heating cables or mats placed on top of it.

The following are the guidelines for using isolon to insulate the floor.

  1. The base surface should be cleaned of dirt and dust, treated with primer.
  2. Before laying parquet, laminate or linoleum, make a leveling screed. In case of wooden floor – make sure that the boards are suitable, if necessary – level them with the help of carpet pad and additional supports. Check the boards, replace rotten and worn out ones.
  3. Isolon is fixed to the concrete surface with double-sided tape, to the wooden surface – with staples (using a construction stapler). In this case, the cloth is stretched from the center (diagonally) to the edges and on the sides – from corner to corner.
  4. A construction knife is used to cut the isolon sheets. The foil layer can be restored with the help of scotch tape with a metallized side.

It’s important to remember that the reflective side of foil insolon (shown in the above photo) should face inwards when insulating rooms. Heat energy will in this instance be reflected into the living space. The content shouldn’t have any gaps in it.

Balcony insulation

The following steps of work are involved in insulating a balcony or loggia.

  1. When insulating the walls and ceiling, a multilayer construction of foam and isolon is created. The first layer is laid with 5 mm isolon (foil side inwards), then foam, and the third layer is 3 mm isolon oriented similarly to the first layer.
  2. Seams between sandwich panels are sealed with metallized tape, wide grooves are foamed.
  3. A purlin made of aluminum profiles or wooden laths is mounted on top of the sandwich panels.
  4. Wooden or plastic battens, moisture-resistant gypsum board, OSB boards (depending on the method of finishing) are attached to the battens.
  5. Floor insulation is performed in the same way, but sandwich panels are laid between lags made of beams laid at a distance of 0.5 – 0.6 m from each other.
  6. Two layers of 16 mm thick moisture-resistant plywood, 40 mm thick planks or OSB boards are laid on the joists. Ceramic tile (laid on glue-mastic) or linoleum can be used as a finishing floor.

Varieties of insulation

The following forms of the material are offered: roll, sheet, foil, and isolon tape.

The dimensions of rolled isolon range from 2 to 10 mm in thickness, 80 to 150 cm in width, and 50 to 200 meters in length.

Labeled isolon as follows: the first 2 digits denote the foam multiplicity, and the second – the thickness of the sheet. For example, Isolon 3005 has a thickness of 5 mm, foam multiplicity of 30 and density of 33 kg/m³.

Important: Isolon with varying thickness and foaming multiplicity of 30 has the same density and sheet width within the roll, but varies in the number of meters within the roll.

  • of increased rigidity;
  • colored Izolon insulators;
  • material with fire retardants in its composition to reduce combustibility.

Crucial! Izolon insulation variants, PSEV, GSE, NPE, and PPE, are marked. Depending on the intended installation’s guiding principle, differentiate:

A distinction is made based on the intended installation’s guiding principle:

  • Isolon foil self-adhesive one-sided insulation;
  • Isolon self-adhesive double-sided;
  • Isolon without adhesive backing.

Instructions for insulating a balcony or loggia

It will be necessary to use Isolon to provide the balcony with high-quality insulation measuring 6 by 1 m:

  1. 25 meters of 5 mm foil insulon
  2. 25 meters of 3-millimeter foil Izolon with lavsan
  3. warm floor (6 squares are taken as standard)
  4. timber for purlins of walls, floor and ceiling of the balcony (50 x 40 mm timber is perfect)
  5. warm floor glue (you can take one and a half bags of Bernauf glue)
  6. 6 meters of reinforcing mesh

  • When insulating a balcony, foil insulon is always laid inwards
  • After laying the foam and battens, it is necessary to foam all the grooves, be sure to level the battens according to the level
  • The next stage is the installation of the thermal field panels
  • As a covering it is recommended to take a magnetized sheet of centimeter thickness (if it is not envisaged to finish the floor with tiles or laminate, you will need a few centimeters of such a sheet or 2 layers)
  • To improve the fixing of the adhesive on the floor is recommended to lay a grid
  • The final stage – laying tiles or laminate, caulking the joints (in the case of laying tiles), trimming excess isolon

It is noteworthy to highlight that the Ministry of Health, Gosstroy, and the State Department of Fire Safety of the CIS countries have fully approved the use of foil insolon as a heat-insulating building material. This approval is based on the developments of the Moscow design and research institute of public and residential buildings.

Insulation of ceiling and floor with Izolon

Because Izolon is too thin, its insulation as an independent insulator naturally produces negligible results. Appropriate insulation technique:

  • mineral wool is laid between the floor or ceiling lags;
  • Isolon is attached to the lags in tension;
  • a counter batten is put up;
  • The finish is laid.

It is quite permissible to lay this material directly under the finish, as noise insulation. To do this, it is enough to fix the material with a construction stapler on the working surface butt-to-butt and glue the joints with scotch tape. If technically possible, it is better to leave a gap between the polyethylene foam and the finish. Even if there is moisture on the insulation, it will successfully evaporate, and will not be absorbed into the finishing materials, which will significantly extend their service life. Many are interested in the question of whether it is possible to insulate the floor with Isolon in a wooden house. It is allowed, but again, as a stand-alone insulation it almost does not give a result.
