Even the smallest areas can have charm and usefulness when it comes to interior design for your house. A hallway offers a chance to create a lasting first impression, but it is frequently disregarded in terms of design. This post explores the design process of creating a compact L-shaped hallway, with an emphasis on the combination of tastefully chosen furniture pieces and traditional wallpaper.
Although they can be difficult to decorate, small hallways can be transformed into chic and hospitable transitional areas in your house with the appropriate design strategy. There are several opportunities to maximize both practicality and aesthetics with the L-shape arrangement. You can make this space a visually appealing passage that expresses your own style by using timeless wallpaper and well-chosen furniture.
For good reason, classic wallpaper designs have endured over time. They are a great option for a hallway because they add tradition and elegance to any area. Whether you go for more detailed patterns like damask or toile, or for more classic patterns like stripes or flowers, classic wallpapers can give your L-shaped hallway depth and personality.
Prioritizing function and style is crucial when choosing furniture for a small hallway. Choosing furniture with slim profiles and simple lines can help keep the room from feeling cramped. A sleek bench or a small console table placed along one wall could serve as a useful surface for holding mail, keys, or decorative accents. A well-placed mirror can also improve the hallway’s perception of light and space.
A tiny L-shaped hallway that radiates classic charm and functionality can be created by pairing well chosen furniture pieces with timeless wallpaper. Whether your style is more formal or more rustic, careful design decisions can transform this sometimes-overlooked part of your house into a delightful passage that makes a lasting impression on visitors.

Illumination
If natural light can enter a hallway in a private home, it cannot exist in an apartment. The corridor lacks natural light because it is devoid of windows. For this reason, it needs a sufficient amount of artificial light.
Lamps alone can’t help with this. There will be more light in the hallway if certain interior doors—like those to the kitchen or living room—are removed. Regarding lamps, the general interior design determines where, how many, and what kind of lamps to use.
LED tape, spotlights, or tiny pendant chandeliers can be installed on the ceiling, depending on the style. In any event, it is best to use multiple smaller light sources rather than a single, large chandelier.
Only high ceilings allow for the use of hanging chandeliers in a space. It is acceptable to hang fashionable sconces on the walls. They will appear especially good across from or adjacent to reflective surfaces. However, keep in mind the corridor’s width; wall lamps shouldn’t impede traffic flow. It is advised that you position them two meters above the ground. Diffused light sources work best. For this use, upward-facing frosted plafonds work well.
It is also possible to highlight certain decor pieces separately. For instance, miniature spotlights can be positioned over pictures or paintings. In the hallway, backlighting can be fitted with protrusions and niches. LED tape will be stretched original length along the joint between the wall and the floor.
It’s important to consider the color of the lights as well. The best color is yellow.
It doesn’t press on the mind or irritate with overbearing brightness.
Hallway design in a private house
A private residence can fulfill every fantasy that one could ever hope to come true. Compared to the spaciousness of his apartment, the hallway’s design is very constrained. But as you are aware, there are drawbacks in addition to benefits.
The choice of standard furniture may be limited by the size of the rooms, which are typically the result of individual projects; however, custom design is always an option.
Since the hallway frequently opens directly into the yard, your options for materials are severely limited—you can only use materials that will hold up against moisture. Install linoleum on the floors, and paint or water-emulsion paint on the walls. We select stainless steel metal racks for clothing and footwear.
The picture doesn’t seem all that cozy. For this reason, once more to our aid, the choice of colors is best left to the expertise of a professional. It can be challenging to choose metal furniture, but it is realistic to coat cold metal in warm hues to draw attention to it. Installing diffused lighting will help the room’s multilevel plastic ceiling from seeming so gloomy.
Everyone can live comfortably as long as they have a goal and the will to achieve it.
Tips for organizing a narrow hallway
It’s crucial to understand that small hallways require extreme caution and attention because it can be very challenging to set up these kinds of rooms properly. Sure, and to also infuse beauty and zest
Zoning
Zoning the area is a good way to achieve this. Take the hall and its area, for instance. Diffused lighting in light shades such as white, milk, coffee, and others should be used in the hallway. Avoid clogging the immediate hallway area with furniture or shoes. Being brief is advantageous in this case.
A lengthy wardrobe spanning the whole wall
You can create this kind of zone delineation because of the variations in wall finishing shades.
The designers highly advise minimizing the amount of furniture in these versions of the hallway and concentrating all attention on the little details. It is advised to decorate one of the walls with an eye-catching pattern.
Mirrors make a small hallway appear larger.
In your hallway, you can safely experiment with different wall finishes. If you’re not into trying new things, go for warm pastel hues. You are permitted to reorganize the space.
Tips on color design
The hallway’s interior’s use of warm colors.
In a two-room apartment, the color scheme chosen for the hallway should complement the other elements of the room, showcase the owners’ preferences, and be cozy. Light natural shades should be prioritized. Eggshells, Karelian birch, burnt clay, and many more colors will make an impression that is appropriate and worthy of decoration.
Almost all of the wooden panel range looks good with sand tones. You can contrast this color with lettuce, lemon, and peach tones.
- Beige colors are very fond of people of any age, the modern industry produces about sixty shades in this color – from pale powder to light brown. These tones work well together in all proportions;
- "Coffee with milk" is a noble shade that is usually diluted with dark wenge, oak or chocolate details. This color scheme is suitable for hallways of any size and can decorate unsightly apartments;
- Light gray shade in fashion for only a few seasons, perfectly combined with black, malachite and even red. Gray is considered a basic color for modern fashionable apartments and requires good lighting, so as not to make the room gloomy;
- White color is rarely used in the hallway, because it easily gets dirty, but any dark space turns into a stylish interior thanks to combinations of white with blue, crimson or gold shades.

To achieve harmony and balance, try to use no more than three shades of the same color throughout your interior design.
A general impression of the home, the owners’ taste, and their wealth is created by the apartment’s entrance hall and the building’s facade. You can control the impression if you tackle this matter with wisdom and good intent.
Choice of color scheme
The color scheme is one of the most important considerations when decorating a hallway. To achieve optimal comfort, select a color palette that includes vibrant accents. Your house should bring you joy at the end of a demanding workday. Display a lovely, fashionable drawing or picture in the hallway.

You can have dark tiles on the floor of your hallway. When used properly, tile requires little maintenance and can be cleaned and used for other tasks.

Natural light will "come in" if the front door is made of glass. But one should exercise caution in this hallway’s lighting. Using just one source is acceptable in this situation. Designers advise choosing diffused light sources more frequently because they look good inside.

Keep in mind that the look you select should complement the whole. Always adhere to the idea and fill the space with simple, well-chosen items. Additionally, furniture needs to be functional—no extraneous items.
Furniture featuring vivid accents
A wardrobe and a nightstand are essential items that one cannot live without. However, a variety of details can still dilute the interior even in this case. It will be helpful to have an umbrella stand or an ottoman in vibrant colors. Consequently, the space will appear more vibrant.

Wooden objects will look harmonious, evoking the feeling of a warm and welcoming home. You won’t feel like you’re in a museum here.
In designing a small L-shaped hallway with classic wallpaper and furniture, the focus lies in optimizing space while maintaining a timeless aesthetic. The layout should prioritize functionality, allowing for smooth traffic flow and easy access to essential areas like entrances and nearby rooms. Classic wallpaper patterns can add elegance and warmth, enhancing the visual appeal of the space. When selecting furniture, opt for pieces that are proportionate to the size of the hallway to prevent overcrowding. Consider incorporating storage solutions such as slim cabinets or wall-mounted shelves to maximize space efficiency. Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the ambiance, so utilize a combination of natural light and strategically placed fixtures to illuminate the area effectively. By carefully balancing design elements and practical considerations, you can create a welcoming and stylish L-shaped hallway that complements the overall aesthetic of your home.
Lighting in narrow hallways
Well-lit hallways are guaranteed to be narrow. One central ceiling light can suffice for an area up to three meters long. A room that is longer than 3.5 meters is split into multiple zones, each of which has extra lighting placed along its perimeter.
Warm colors should be used in lighting sources. A range of built-in lighting options are frequently used to create stunning designs. These lights can be installed in furniture, walls, etc. It is imperative that switches are placed in easily accessible areas. For convenience, you can install automatic heat and movement sensors in long hallways. This will guarantee that when someone enters or exits the hallway, the lights will switch on and off automatically.
Wall lights in narrow hallways should not be installed in rows. At first glance, it appears that it will look fantastic: lovely lights at the same distance apart on the long wall. Maybe that’s true, but not in small areas. Here, you run the risk of visually narrowing the space even further, and forward-protruding lamps will constantly impede it.
Features of the finishing of the modern style
The corridor has a distinct functional direction and microclimate. This room is difficult to organize. Negative factors must be taken into account for all surfaces. If not, the repair won’t last long and the interior will quickly lose its attractive appearance. It will be vital to skillfully complete the finish in order for the hallway to sustain all of the tests that are placed upon it.
Every project begins with the ceiling. Negative influences have very little effect in this area. Consequently, there are no unique limitations when it comes to selecting the materials for its finishing. Simple solutions that work in a variety of room sizes will be the best choice. The hallway’s white ceiling gives the room a more spacious appearance and seems natural.
Walls are exposed to mechanical forces and get dirty easily. All of this detracts from the interior’s overall design. It is best to avoid using paper or textile wallpaper to adorn the walls in this room because of this feature. Perfect for panels in hallways. This chic and useful solution works well in both large and small spaces. There is an enormous selection of panels: patterned, smooth, textured, and monochrome. Certain species are used as natural material imitators because of their similar appearance.
The hallway’s walls can be painted or covered in wallpaper.
An excellent way to finish the hallway’s floor is with ceramic tile.
The possibility of mechanical damage should be considered beforehand.
The first to become worn out, soiled, and unfit for use in the hallway floor covering. Selecting a material that will withstand harmful influences is not simple. Ceramic tiles are the best option, as experience has shown. It has numerous benefits, including resistance to moisture, tiny stones, mechanical harm, durability, and dependability. This material has a long service life and excellent aesthetic qualities.
Ceramic tiles can be mixed and matched with other floor coverings despite their high cost. For apartments, this kind of design solution is perfect. As seen in the picture, tile is placed at the entrance, followed by laminate or linoleum. Their colors can be combined to create a beautiful and harmonious look for the materials.
You can install ceramic tiles at the entrance and then linoleum.
Ceramic tiles are the best choice for flooring finishing.
Techniques and ideas for increasing the space
If visual space is still lacking after applying all of the aforementioned advice, the following extra effect will help to create:
- Glossy surfaces. Reflection is the main weapon in the fight against small space. A high-gloss ceiling provides opportunities to play with light.
- Diagonal pattern of flooring will make the room look square.
- When choosing the design of lighting fixtures, it is worthwhile to stop at small devices.
- Installing decorative objects opposite the mirror will give the effect of symmetrical arrangement of them.
- An alternative to conventional interior doors, if the creation of arches is inappropriate, can be the design of sliding doors or the use of curtains to divide the rooms.
- Rays of light should fall from the ceiling to the walls, and not vice versa.
- The effect of a spacious hallway can be achieved by zoning technique. For this purpose, it is enough to use a combination of different surface finishes.

Choosing a floor covering
The flooring in the hallway is mechanically stressed every day by the friction from the soles of shoes. If there are pets in the home, the load is higher.
Selecting a long-lasting, wear-resistant floor covering is crucial, and it has additional requirements: resistance to moisture and simplicity of cleaning
Best options for hallways
- Laminate flooring is a durable, beautiful and modern material that is easy to clean and can last up to 15 years. The main thing is to choose the right product class.
- Porcelain stoneware and ceramic tiles are highly resistant to wear and tear, easy to clean and long-lasting. It is also possible to install a "warm floor" system under this type of flooring. The only disadvantage is the fragility of the surface. A dense mat can protect the tiles.
- Linoleum – is not afraid of moisture, resistant to mechanical damage, easy to clean and with proper use can last 7-11 years.
You can use parquet as an alternative type of flooring for the hallway.
It is dependable, robust, and long-lasting. The downside is that scratches can damage the lacquer’s top layer, and it is afraid of moisture.
Style direction of the hallway
Being the first area of the house to greet guests, the hallway ought to set the stage for their subsequent experiences. It is therefore best to maintain it in the same style as the other rooms.
You will need to start from the hallway’s window, so consider its layout when designing it. An interior designed in any of the following styles would be a great choice for such a hallway and the entire house:
- Classic;
- English;
- Country;
- Provence;
- Modern;
- Art Deco;
- High-tech;
- Minimalism.
One of the components that will shape the style is the window. As a result, you should consider its composition (wood or plastic) and design (classic "lattice" or modern minimalist). And already, to choose a style for the entire room, in addition to all of this. If not, you might find yourself in a scenario where the window is out of frame and appears to "ruin" the otherwise well-thought-out interior.
Design of a hallway of large size
Entering the apartment is pleasant because there’s always a spot to sit down and change shoes, hang clothes, place an umbrella, place shoes on a shelf, and do other small tasks. All these activities are made possible by the spacious hallway. Nonetheless, the space ought to be styled cohesively and never overstuffed with extraneous decorations and accessories.
Remember the main objective of this section of the house.
Furniture arrangement
Large furniture can be installed in a large room, allowing you to hide everything from view—personal belongings as well as basic necessities. The items in the other rooms and the hallway should have the same style or a cohesive appearance.
This is the room we are in the last before leaving the house and the first we enter again.
Closet | It is necessary to purchase a closet – compartment on the size of the entire wall. This choice provides an opportunity to hide outerwear, shoes and accessories that the household uses daily or occasionally. |
Closet doors can be decorated with drawings, patterns or mirrors. The last option saves wall space for decor. There is an advantage – you can choose the design of the cabinet yourself (decorate it with family photos, selected pattern or ornament).
Internal filling obliges to have a lot of shelves, drawers, crossbars for outerwear and accessories (ties, belts, scarves).
Mirror | Since the area of the room allows, you can hang a full-length mirror, which will be a nice addition to the interior. Especially such an element will appeal to the fair sex to try on their outfits, to look at themselves from all sides. |
The framing of the mirror is selected according to style. It can also be completely absent, creating a minimalist interior.
Pouffe, sofa, armchair | Sitting on a pouffe, a soft sofa or an armchair, you can change your shoes in comfort. |
A wide pouf or sofa gives the opportunity to shoe several family members at once, while not making each other uncomfortable. |
Our focus should be primarily on functionality.
To bring attention to it, the furniture’s color scheme is chosen to be a few shades darker than the walls. Wooden furniture or furniture composed of MDF is a good alternative.
Lighting
Since soft light greatly influences the hallway’s design, it will be helpful in the lighting design process. It is preferable to place tiny gadgets close to the mirror.
A chandelier will serve as the primary focal point and complement the room’s design.
The striking outcome of the makeover will display a multilevel ceiling with integrated lighting.
Decor elements
It will be beneficial to decorate the bare walls and corners with tall flower-filled vases, one or more paintings, family portraits, and statuettes. The style must be emphasized by the decor elements without being overdone.
Selecting one or three items from the suggested options will suffice.
Country | High – tek | Classic | Romance |
The room will be decorated with elements of wood, stone. | Complemented with leather accessories or pieces of furniture. | The style implies the use of gilding, monograms, massive furniture and accessories. | Famous for vintage decor from porcelain, glass. |
Textile decorations are suitable. | Fixtures of unusual shape will complete the transformation. | Suitable for paintings or photos in gilded massive frames. | An excellent solution – elegant lamps, mirrors. |
Highlighting the features of the room
Traditional g-shaped hallway design.
By bringing attention to its benefits and smoothing over its flaws, any area at the front door can be elevated.
One benefit of a corner hallway is that it can be integrated into a room or used as a sliding partition in place of a door. By using various materials to finish the hallway, you can use this design technique to visually increase its area.
Create a g-shaped hallway featuring a closet.
A long, narrow area is easily separated into two functional zones: the lobby and the apartment’s entrance. Using zoned color schemes, multi-level ceilings with built-in lighting, and finishing touches will let you design a comfortable interior in any style.
A g-shaped hallway’s flooring can be mixed and matched: tiles at the entry doors, suitable parquet, laminate, or carpeting closer to the rooms.
Wall decoration in the hallway with light colors.
Any style—such as ornamental plaster, wagon wheels, wallpaper, plastic, or stone tiles—is appropriate for walls. Everything is based on the style selection. It is best to stay away from using large patterns and contrasting colors when designing a narrow space.
The apartment’s tiny hallway’s layout.
The g-shaped hallway’s staircase can be changed: appropriate built-in lockers for shoes and clothing are located beneath the steps. Create mezzanines at the very top if the ceilings are high. They visually balance out the room’s imbalance, and it’s a great place to keep scarves, gloves, and hats. This is an excellent replacement for a chest of drawers.
Decoration
The most crucial step is to divide the hallway’s available space appropriately; the room is split into two hallways. Since the hallway is used to greet guests, it is best to keep its furniture to a minimum.
Shades and wallpaper should be used to create separation.
It is essential to reduce the amount of furniture in both the first and second sections of the hallway while paying close attention to the small details. For instance, you could hang a picture on the wall to draw attention away from how big the hallway is.
Once more, using dark hues—of your choosing—is prohibited. Instead, use vibrant colors.
If you are fortunate enough to own a penthouse or duplex apartment, the interior of the building is already unique, so you won’t need to do anything special; instead, you can highlight the existing interior design.
The staircase is the focal point of this type of interior design, so it makes sense to place furnishings in the hallway that complement the space and have an organic appearance. The same style should be applied to everything.
The first thing to do is to lighten up the hallway, which is typically a dimly lit space that could use spotlights.
Designers" tips
By using a few techniques, you can aesthetically enhance and balance the hallway area;
- To diversify the interior of the hallway with a window will help stained glass window. They fill all or part of the window. Figure can be any: from classical to avant-garde, it all depends on the style of the interior and the preferences of the owners. It is necessary to carefully choose the color scheme of stained glass, which affects the perception of the entire interior. For example, gloomy will look gloomy hallway with a blue window. And golden shades, on the contrary, will create a sunny mood even on a cloudy day;
- If there is a staircase to the second floor, you can pick up for the hallway matching with it wooden furniture. This will help the interior to look holistic and harmonious;
- If the ceiling of the hallway is too high, there is a so-called "second light", you can divide the wall horizontally. Decorate the lower part with wallpaper or panels of bright color with a throw pattern, and the upper part – make neutral, better match the color of the ceiling. Strengthen the effect will help to go along the border of a wide molding;
- If the window does not face the courtyard, but the street, do not cover it with curtains. It is better to choose a suitable glass: stained, fluted or frosted glass.
What your hallway’s final interior looks like is irrelevant. The most important thing is to ensure that you always want to go home and that you feel at ease and comfortable there.
Furniture and its placement
In small hallways, uncomfortable furniture is the main issue. This indicates that it’s time to replace the dated, large closets in the hallway with more contemporary, small-space storage options.
Small square hallway
Because there is ample room on both sides of a square hallway, they are convenient. As a result, you can place linear furniture along one wall (for instance, a shoe rack beneath an open coat rack with hooks near the front door, next to a cabinet and a mirror), and if space permits, a shallow closet-cupboard along the opposite wall.
Another choice would be to put low shoe shelves in the remaining space and place the radius cabinets with rounded doors in the corners.
Narrow (rectangular) small hallway
It is worthwhile to make the most of the space above and close to the front door in a small hallway. Narrow storage units should be positioned on the sides, and a chic mezzanine should be at the top.
It is preferable to just hang a large mirror on the wall rather than using a large mirror with a cabinet. By purchasing a closet with a mirrored door, you can see yourself from head to toe.
Purchasing a specialized shoe rack with hinged shelves is ideal for holding shoes. Each pair should be arranged at an angle rather than horizontally.
Small hallway of non-standard shape
Hangers are frequently tucked under the stairs in private homes and two-story apartments to conserve space. Sometimes the architect’s original plan for the non-standard shape of the corridor was to achieve this through redevelopment.
In any case, it is preferable to order furniture based on unique measurements and drawings for unusual rooms, as each cabinet will fit precisely into the designated niche.
Layout | Small L-shaped hallway |
Theme | Classic wallpaper |
Furniture | Coordinating with classic style |
An L-shaped small hallway needs to be designed with both style and functionality in mind. This frequently disregarded area can be made into a quaint and inviting entryway for your house by adding vintage wallpaper and well chosen furniture.
The hallway’s classic wallpaper sets the tone for the rest of the house with its timeless elegance. To give a small space the impression of space, choose muted colors and subtle patterns. Think about adding a whimsical touch with floral prints or visually lengthening the room with striped designs.
Give priority to multipurpose furniture when choosing pieces for your L-shaped hallway. A small console table with drawers can be used as a surface for arranging fresh flowers in a vase or as storage for mail and keys. Select furniture with light finishes and clean lines to avoid making the room appear cluttered.
An important factor in improving the atmosphere in your hallway is the lighting. Install pendant lights or sconces to draw attention to architectural details or artwork while illuminating the area. In order to reflect light and give the impression of more space, think about adding a mirror.
Lastly, keep in mind the significance of functional components like insulation. Maintaining year-round comfort and energy efficiency in your hallway is made possible by properly installed insulation. To keep the area cool in the summer and stop heat loss during the colder months, insulate the walls and floors.
In conclusion, striking a balance between style and utility is necessary when designing a small L-shaped hallway with traditional wallpaper and furnishings. You can create a warm and welcoming entry point to your home that reflects your individual taste and improves the overall aesthetic of your living space by carefully choosing wallpaper patterns, adaptable furniture pieces, and suitable lighting.
